CORPORATE HISTORY

1983

Founded by Eugen Wieser and Alexander Rhomberg. Company goal: the cost-effective production of magnesium granules for the iron and steel industry and traditional magnesium products for the chemical industry. Alexander Rhomberg has been the managing director of Almamet since its establishment.

1985

The newly built factory in Turkey, MME, in Cerkezköy (100 km west of Istanbul) starts operations. Today, desulfurization products for the steel industry and magnesium products for chemical and pyrotechnical applications are produced there for the Almamet Group worldwide.

1986

The first production facility for magnesium-based desulfurization reagents goes into operation near Duisburg in the Ruhr area.

1988

Almamet moves to the new office in Ainring/Upper Bavaria, where the headquarters of the Almamet Group is still located today.

1993

During the course of the fall of the Iron Curtain, Almamet expands its activities into the countries of Eastern Europe as well as Russia and Ukraine.

1994

The Duisburg plant is expanded to meet the increasing demand for magnesium-based desulfurization reagents in the steel industry.

1997

The joint venture, SZD, a company for the production of magnesium granules and desulfurization reagents, is established in Solikamsk, Russia, in collaboration with the magnesium producer, SMW.

1998

The production facility in the Ruhr area is moved to Ratingen, where a new modern blending plant goes into operation.

2000

Establishment of the first subsidiary in India (Kolkata) with a production facility in Jamshedpur.

2003

First representative office of Almamet in Baotou/China.

2004

Construction of a lime processing plant in Koushwa (Russia) as part of the newly founded joint venture company, ZMR, with the Russian steel group Evraz.

2005

Opening of the Almamet office in Beijing.

Establishment of the subsidiary Almamet Romania and start of production of desulfurization reagents at the Tarnaveni location.

2006

Establishment of the subsidiary Almamet China and commissioning of a factory for magnesium granules at the Tianjin site.

2007

Establishment of the subsidiary Almamet Ukraine in Mariupol.

2008

Commissioning of a new plant for the production of sinter and fluidized lime at Thyssen/HKM in Duisburg.

2010

Establishment of the Almamet USA subsidiary in West Pittsburgh.

2012

New foundation of Almamet India in New Delhi with a production facility in Bellary.

2014

All Almamet locations worldwide are certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

2017

Establishment of Almamet South Africa in Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg.

2018

Acquisition of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG (formerly Polysius) product rights for desulfurization plants, which are transferred to the newly founded Almamet Industrial Solutions (AIS).

2019

Construction and commissioning of the first hot metal desulfurization plant at Jindal Steel and Power (Angul/India) by AIS.

Acquisition of MSE, Thuringia, a company specialised in the recycling of magnesium chips.
